Canto V: The Creator Without Face

The anonymous creator thankful_for_today founds Monero and disappears, leaving community as heir.

The chronicle of Erebus holds its founding enigma. Who brought the coin into existence? The name appearing in the original Bitcointalk forum announcement in 2014 is thankful_for_today, a pseudonym never associated with a real identity. After a few weeks of conflict with the community over the project's technical direction, thankful_for_today disappeared.

After disagreements with thankful_for_today in 2014, other participants took over development. Continuity arose from community action, not simply an unexplained disappearance. Erebus found his image in that transition: the work did not have to remain in its initiator’s hands.

Riccardo Spagni, known as fluffypony, became one of Monero’s public faces. His departure as lead maintainer was announced in December 2019, with responsibilities transferred to other participants. This change predates his 2021 legal difficulties and should not be attributed to them.

And still, the network continued. Without creators. Without a central figure. With a distributed team of developers, many of whom are pseudonyms or completely anonymous, contributing code that is peer-reviewed before being implemented.

And this may be the deepest sign that Monero is truly decentralized. Not because a whitepaper says so. Not because a founder promises it. But because when the founders left, the shadow remained. Erebus does not depend on a face. Primordial darkness existed before the gods and will survive them all.

Ε
The shadow does not depend on a face. Erebus is prior to any individual.
