The Ignition: Base
Base is born as an eruption, distribution, not just technology, and when Surtr pushes the system stops being niche
On August ninth, two thousand and twenty-three, Base entered the world for the general public. Built on the OP Stack, the same foundation as Helheim, Optimism's open architecture, Base was not just another L2 competing for TVL market share with other realms. It was the first L2 built by a company with a hundred million real users and the explicit mission of bringing one billion people onchain.
Jesse Pollak, Head of Protocols at Coinbase, Base's chief architect, had articulated the vision with radical clarity: not to build a protocol for crypto builders, but to build infrastructure that would make onchain invisible to the end user. The goal was not for people to understand blockchain. It was for blockchain to solve their problems without them needing to understand blockchain.
Base is born this way. Not as an isolated academic research project. Not as a venture capital experiment seeking exit. But as an eruption, the natural and inevitable expression of accumulated tension between what Coinbase had built in distribution and what Midgard had built in infrastructure. Base was the meeting of the two forces.
A foundational decision marked Base as different from any previous L2: no native token. Base would use ETH as the gas token, it would not create its own token to capture value or distribute governance. No ICO. No promised airdrop. No elaborate tokenomics designed to attract speculative liquidity. There was only a working product, with world-class infrastructure, connected directly to the world's largest regulated crypto platform.
Surtr pushes. And when he pushes with the force of ninety-eight million verified users behind an L2 infrastructure built on Optimism's shoulders, the system ceases to be niche. Muspelheim does not announce its beginning with trumpets. It announces with transaction counts that begin growing day after day, week after week, without incentive campaigns, without artificial TVL inflation.
