The Forced Expansion
Muspelheim spreads, when the system stops requiring awareness to be used, Surtr is present
Muspelheim's expansion does not work like that of other realms. Vanaheim grows organically, builders choosing the best ecosystem on technical merit. Helheim grows by philosophy, people who believe in the second chance. Muspelheim grows differently: it spreads through the systematic removal of each friction point that had kept billions of people outside.
Coinbase Smart Wallet arrived as Surtr's silent weapon: a wallet that works like an account, no seed phrase to store, no browser extension to install, no initiation ritual that frightens newcomers at step two. Anyone with a Passkey on their phone could have an onchain wallet in seconds. Complexity receded. Onboarding did not merely simplify, it disappeared.
Interfaces that previously required users to understand what they were doing began hiding that requirement. Applications built on Base could sponsor their users' gas, the user never saw a message about gas, never needed ETH to pay for transactions, never needed to understand the concept of network fees. The product simply worked. Like a Web2 app works.
In March two thousand and twenty-four, EIP-4844, proto-danksharding, was activated on Ethereum mainnet. Gas costs on L2s fell between ten and one hundred times overnight. Base, which was already cheap, became ridiculously cheap, transactions costing fractions of a cent. The last economic barrier to everyday use had disappeared. Surtr had removed the final stone from the wall.
And this is the greatest signal of Surtr's presence: when the system ceases to require consciousness to be used. When the user does not need to know they are using blockchain to benefit from blockchain. When the technology disappears inside the product, as the internet disappeared inside email, as TCP/IP disappeared inside the browser. Muspelheim does not want people to understand the fire. It wants them to be warmed by it.
