The Secret of the Divine Artifacts
Mjölnir does not fail: because it was created under dual vigilance
In January 2022, Polygon’s forge introduced Plonky2, a recursive proof system developed by Polygon Zero’s team. Its performance results opened possibilities for the smiths. Each measurement belonged to a task and specific conditions; the new hammer still had to find its place among the other tools.
Sindri allowed them to exist. Eitri ensured they would not break. The gods carry power. But the power was forged under internal conflict. Plonky2 was not merely an incremental improvement. It was an architectural rupture, a system that combined the efficiency of STARKs with the succinctness of SNARKs, using a Goldilocks prime field that made proof generation possible on common hardware. Where previous systems needed minutes to generate proofs, Plonky2 needed seconds.
Polygon Zero and Jordi Baylina’s work on Polygon Hermez, later Polygon zkEVM, were distinct branches of the great forge. Plonky2 was not simply the proof system of the zkEVM launched in 2023. The smiths shared ambitions, but their tools had separate lineages.
Recursion could combine verifications into further proofs, reducing some of the work needed to check large executions. The Goldilocks field supported efficient operations. Integration, circuits and testing remained: a proof-system advance did not automatically deliver real-time proofs for the entire EVM.
The gods do not need to understand how Mjölnir was forged to use it. Thor knows nothing of Svartalfheim's metallurgy. He knows only the result: the hammer works, always, without exception. Plonky2 was the moment when the Polygon team knew that the definitive artifact was within reach. Not as promise. As verifiable path, with schedule, with milestones, with mathematical certainty that it was possible to get there.
