The Modern Forge
XLayer is born as an artifact: precision above marketing
On 16 April 2024, OKX announced the public mainnet opening of X Layer, built with Polygon CDK. This is Svartalfheim’s digital identity. Polygon research explains its technical lineage, but X Layer, Polygon PoS and Polygon zkEVM are distinct networks. A tool’s history must not replace the work’s history.
It does not seek to dominate. It seeks to endure. Polygon CDK represented the second generation of Svartalfheim's work, not merely a zkEVM network, but a tool for forging zkEVM networks. The distinction was fundamental: instead of creating a single perfect artifact, the dwarves had created the capacity to replicate the forging process. The technology that had taken years to develop became accessible as modular infrastructure.
CDK offered tools for networks with their own configurations. Astar zkEVM was another project in this family in 2024. Shared tools do not imply identical circuits, data availability, governance or guarantees. Announced plans elsewhere do not equal networks already launched with the same architecture.
In the same period, Polygon announced the AggLayer, an aggregation layer that would allow different zkEVM chains to share liquidity and state natively, using ZK proofs to guarantee consistency across chains without the need for traditional bridges. The AggLayer was Svartalfheim's vision at systemic scale: not merely verifying individual transactions, but verifying the state of multiple networks simultaneously with a single recursive proof.
The modern forge is not a place. It is a process that replicates itself. And each replication carries the same principles that produced the original artifact: mathematical rigor, formal verification, refusal to compromise security for speed to launch. Polygon did not merely build a zkEVM network. It built the methodology of Svartalfheim, transferable, applicable, replicable by any team willing to follow the same refinement process.
