The Birth of the Delta
Arbitrum is born as a delta: a natural extension of Ethereum's flow
As Arbitrum prepared to open in 2021, six years had passed since Ethereum mainnet’s birth in July 2015. Thor knew both the power of contracts and the weight of demand. The river was growing; the Vanir sought space for their delta.
Arbitrum is born this way. Not as a rupture with Ethereum, not as a declaration of alternative sovereignty. But as a delta, natural extension of Ethereum's flow beyond its capacity limits. Ed Felten, Steven Goldfeder, and Harry Kalodner of Offchain Labs were not seeking to replace Thor. They sought to create the space where Thor could grow without suffocating.
The delta processed transactions off the main channel and published data and state commitments on Ethereum. Fraud challenges tied its security to Midgard, but sequencers, upgrades and dispute mechanisms also required attention. The Vanir did not receive Thor’s strength without building and guarding the bridges carrying it.
The first delta used Arbitrum Classic. Nitro was not yet in production: activation would come on 31 August 2022, as described in the chapter about nature’s test. The seed of 2021 must not be given the technical fruits of a future upgrade.
Vanir do not build dams that interrupt the flow to accumulate power. They create fertile lands around it where the excess deposits and transforms into new life. Arbitrum is the fertile land around Ethereum, not its competitor, not its replacement, but the physical expression of its abundance spilling beyond its banks.
