CANTO XI: THE MERCHANT GOD MEETS THE CENSORS
Pavel Durov’s August 2024 arrest places Telegram under judicial scrutiny in France
On 24 August 2024, Pavel Durov was detained on arrival at Le Bourget airport in France. The news crossed the channels he had helped create. Veles heard Perun’s thunder and gathered his guardians: the dispute now personally reached Telegram’s founder.
The French investigation included suspected complicity in unlawful activities facilitated by the platform and refusal to cooperate with authorized authorities. These were allegations to examine in proceedings, not a conviction. The dispute went beyond a simple allegation of negligent moderation.
Veles’s followers debated privacy, platform responsibility and judicial requests. Telegram had reporting and moderation mechanisms, but their adequacy was central to the dispute. No thunderbolt could settle those questions alone: each allegation required its own evidence.
Durov was placed under judicial supervision in France on 28 August 2024, with a five-million-euro bond. Telegram remained available. TON, though independent of that decision, suffered block-production interruptions in August, associated with load and validator coordination. Institutional resilience and technical availability were different tests.
The arrest brought attention and uncertainty. Veles distinguished the paths before him: a man facing legal proceedings, a company and an independent network. Their paths crossed but were not identical. The guardians would have to follow each one.
They arrested the founder. But they could not arrest the foundation.
