CANTO IV: TELEGRAM: THE FORTRESS OF PRIVACY
In 2018, Telegram presents Telegram Open Network and the proposed Gram token
In 2018, the Durov brothers presented Telegram Open Network, TON’s original name, and the proposed Gram token. The aim was to connect a blockchain to the messenger’s audience. The Open Network would become the name of the later community-led continuation after Telegram withdrew.
Telegram grows not through venture capital or advertising, but through pure adoption. It grows because in a world where privacy is increasingly surveillance, people want a tool that actually protects them. By 2015, it has ten million users. By 2017, one hundred million. By 2020, five hundred million. The application spreads to every corner of the world where people fear surveillance and value privacy, which is to say, to every corner of the world.
Sharding was central to the proposal: dividing work among chains to expand capacity with demand. Millions of transactions per second were architectural projections, not observed production traffic in 2018. Bitcoin’s base layer did not process thousands per second either. Veles imagined a road whose capacity still had to be demonstrated.
The United States demands compliance with American law. Russia bans it and then un-bans it and then bans it again. Iran shuts it down. China forbids it. Britain threatens it with legal action. India, Turkey, and dozens of other countries demand backdoors to read user messages. And through all of this pressure, Telegram remains fundamentally what it was designed to be: technically impervious to the kinds of surveillance that governments deploy.
By the time Telegram reaches five hundred million users, it has become more than an application, it has become a statement. It is proof that you can build something that serves millions of people without serving power, without selling data, without exploiting users. It is proof that another way is possible. And it is the fortress from which the next act of the Veles saga will be launched.
Telegram is a choice. It is a choice to say that your life is yours, not ours, not theirs.
