CANTO VI: THE DEATH OF GRAM, THE RESURRECTION OF TON
The GRAM ICO collapses under SEC pressure, but the TON community continues development independently.
The SEC victory appears complete. GRAM is dead. The ICO investors who contributed billions of dollars lose access to their funds, the SEC has frozen everything. Telegram's official involvement in The Open Network is terminated. Pavel Durov announces that he will focus exclusively on Telegram's core mission: encrypted messaging. The Open Network project appears to be abandoned.
But something remarkable happens in the space between official death and actual extinction. The community does not accept this ending. Developers around the world, inspired by the vision but not controlled by Durov's company, begin to continue the development of The Open Network. They call themselves the TON Community. They do not have the resources of Telegram. They do not have the blessing of its founder. But they have something more powerful: they believe in the project, and they refuse to let it die.
The continuation that became The Open Network adopted Toncoin as its asset. This was not merely renaming an already launched Gram: Telegram’s original project had stopped before delivering the network and tokens to investors as planned. A new community carried the code and ambition forward under different organization.
Meanwhile, the Telegram community begins to rediscover what TON was designed to do. It was designed for mini-apps, decentralized applications that would run within Telegram itself. It was designed to enable Notcoin, the Telegram-native gaming currency that would launch years later and attract millions of users. It was designed to enable Hamster Kombat, another gaming sensation that would prove that Telegram users wanted more than just encrypted messages.
By 2023, The Open Network is alive again, not as GRAM, not as Durov's creation, but as a community-driven protocol that has proven impossible to kill. It becomes clear that the SEC's victory was temporary. The idea cannot be stopped. The technology cannot be stopped. And Veles, the god of the invisible marketplace, has simply found a new form to inhabit.
We killed the project. But we could not kill the idea.
