The Launch That Was Not Loud
Optimism enters the world: it does not promise wealth, it promises continuity
Optimism began a restricted mainnet in January 2021 and removed its contract deployment allowlist in December 2021. Opening was gradual. Helheim did not emerge complete in one night: its gates widened as the infrastructure was tested.
The Optimism Collective and OP token were announced in April 2022. The first airdrop began on 31 May 2022. Announcing the reward and placing it in participants’ hands were distinct stages of the recognition Hel sought to offer.
Builders who had paused projects because of gas… return. Projects frozen by the cost barrier… advance again. Users who could not afford to test new ideas… test. Uniswap, Synthetix, Aave, protocols already existing in Midgard, expand to Helheim. Not to replace Midgard. To reach those who were beyond the gate of cost.
The first gates still depended on authorized guardians. Open fault-proof challenges would reach OP Mainnet in June 2024, after further development. Hel broadened access while refining the watch: each opening needed tools capable of sustaining it.
Helheim does not promise wealth. It promises continuity. And in that moment, when half the projects had frozen from inability to pay gas, when builders had migrated to other realms or abandoned the space entirely, continuity was the most valuable good any realm could offer.
