The First Descent
Avalanche enters the world: finality in seconds
On September twenty-first, two thousand and twenty, the Avalanche mainnet launched. The ecosystem grew with speed that surprised even its creators. In two thousand and twenty-one, when the DeFi summer still burned and Midgard's fees were suffocating small projects, the Avalanche Rush, a $180 million incentive program, attracted DeFi protocols to the new realm. Trader Joe became the largest DEX in the ecosystem. Pangolin provided native liquidity. What Midgard could not offer due to fees became possible over Niflheim's finality.
In September 2021, the Avalanche Foundation announced a $230 million private token sale led by Polychain Capital and Three Arrows Capital. This was a foundation token sale, not an Ava Labs equity round in August. Capital expanded the realm’s reach without replacing the need for use and development.
Transactions ceased to be *"probable."* They became definitive. Markets quickly perceived the impact: DeFi requires fast decisions. Arbitrage requires certainty. Liquidation requires irreversibility. What had been academic philosophy was now daily operation measured in seconds.
Niflheim found its role among the realms, not the most talked about, not the most brilliant. The most certain.
And certainty, as ice always discovers, is more durable than light.
