The Worlds Within the Ice
Subnets: sovereign worlds with freedom and finality
Subnets emerge. And they change everything. They are not sidechains. They are not L2. They are worlds of their own, each with its validators, its rules, its economy, its compliance logic.
A subnet can require all its validators to undergo KYC. It can operate with a native currency other than AVAX. It can have privacy rules that Midgard could never implement without sacrificing its architecture. It can be completely private, operated by a consortium of banks, with no transaction visible to the outside world, but with the finality of the same Avalanche consensus that protects the main network.
Beam, dedicated to gaming. DeFi Kingdoms Chain, for the RPG universe of DeFi. Shrapnel, for the shooter that treats items as real assets. Evergreen Subnets, designed specifically for institutional use, where compliance and privacy are non-negotiable requirements. AvaCloud emerged so that any company could create and operate its own subnet without building infrastructure from scratch.
Each subnet organizes its own validators and rules. It does not automatically inherit all of the primary network’s economic security, nor must it use exactly the same virtual machine or consensus. The rivers share a landscape, but each channel has its own supporting conditions.
Hvergelmir, Niflheim's primordial wellspring, was the source from which all rivers of the nine worlds were born. The subnets are Niflheim's rivers: each with its course, its temperature, its speed. But all flowing from the same motionless origin.
