Canto IX: The ETF, When Mortals Legitimize Gods
Bitcoin: approval in January 2024; Ethereum: rule approval in May and trading in July
In 2024, two developments broadened traditional-market access to Bitcoin and ether. They came on different dates and touched Odin’s and Thor’s realms. Zeus followed from Olympus: every new passage between markets changed the horizon for all, even when it did not open directly to TRON.
It was January 10, 2024, and the American Securities and Exchange Commission, that same beast that regulators fear, approved the first spot Bitcoin ETFs in the United States. BlackRock, Fidelity, Invesco, Franklin Templeton, the largest asset managers in the world, launched products that allowed any American investor to buy Bitcoin exposure through conventional brokerage accounts, without crypto wallet, without seed phrase, without anything beyond a click in an app that the investor already used to buy stocks.
Odin recognized a new entrance. The SEC had authorized listing and trading of those products; it had not endorsed Bitcoin or guaranteed the investment. The milestone was institutional, and market uncertainty still accompanied those crossing the portal.
Fifteen years separated the genesis block of January 2009 from that January of 2024. Odin surveyed the path: code, mining, crises and debate had preceded the new products. The door had opened through concrete institutional and market decisions after a long dispute, not an inevitability written in runes.
For Ethereum, listing rules were approved on 23 May 2024; the spot products began trading on 23 July. Thor received the news in Midgard while Zeus recognized its reach. Bitcoin, Ethereum and TRON kept their identities even when their destinies met in the same council.
There was no winner. There were only two victors who recognized each other.
