Canto XII: The God Transforms the Bird
Elon Musk changes Twitter's logo to the Shiba Inu: DOGE rises 30% in hours
Dionysus has the gift of metamorphosis. On 3 April 2023, Twitter’s web interface began showing the Shiba Inu in place of the blue bird. The substitution was temporary, but enough to put the dog back at the center of conversation.
Twitter’s familiar symbol made room for the Doge meme. DOGE’s market price rose sharply. The episode showed the reach of a visual gesture without turning an interface change into adoption of the token for payments.
Musk had bought Twitter in October 2022; the rebranding to X would follow in July 2023. That April, plans for a broader application fueled payment speculation. The dog was a cultural signal, not confirmation of a financial integration.
The change also signaled something about the culture Musk was building in X: a resistance to sober corporatism, an openness to the absurd as a communication tool, a bet that lightness can coexist with strategic seriousness. The same man who built the most powerful rocket in human history saw the meme dog as a symbol compatible with that ambition.
In the digital pantheon, Musk's action amounted to Zeus lending his prestige to the Dionysian cult, the god of Olympian order publicly legitimizing the god of sacred chaos. Other gods observed with a mixture of confusion and recognition: something about Dogecoin resisted conventional categorization, and that something could not be indefinitely ignored, no matter how hard the guardians of seriousness tried.
The bird is dead. Long live the dog.
