Canto VIII: The Great Festival
The 2021 surge takes DOGE from fractions of a cent to about $0.73
Dionysus convokes great festivals only once in a generation. In January 2021, while the world still processed the pandemic and r/WallStreetBets compressed GameStop to the absurdity of $500 per share, the Dionysian spirit had taken hold of retail markets. Millions of people discovered that they could, collectively, move markets. That mass coordination through social networks was a new form of financial power.
Dogecoin began 2021 trading at fractions of a cent. A late-January surge took it to several cents amid social-media investor mobilization. The invitation sounded simple: why not Dogecoin? The simplicity concealed how violent the swings could be.
Elon Musk amplified. *One word: Doge.* *Dogecoin is the people's crypto.* *No highs, no lows, only Doge.* Each post moved the market with the precision of lightning. The man who had built the most powerful rocket in human history was using his reach to convince the world to buy a meme dog. The Maenads danced.
Between February and April 2021, DOGE rose from $0.05 to $0.40. Market capitalization exceeded $50 billion. People who had bought for fun in 2014 and forgotten wallets on old computers discovered they had become millionaires. Dionysian abundance materialized literally: the unlimited-supply coin, created to be spent not hoarded, was generating wealth for those who had participated in the cult for pure joy.
On 8 May 2021, DOGE quotations reached around $0.73, with small differences across markets. The peak crowned months of euphoria. Dionysus watched the dog atop the financial pantheon, knowing no celebration could turn a market price into destiny.
This is not investment. This is religion. And I am a devout believer.
