Winter and the Rock
Markets fell: but what is structural remains
Markets fell. In two thousand and twenty-two, the crypto winter arrived with the brutality that only real falls possess, not the gradual coldness of skepticism, but the rapid collapse of excess. LUNA. FTX. Celsius. Names that had promised worlds disappeared in weeks.
Polygon suffered. MATIC's price fell with the rest of the market. Projects that had built on Polygon sought alternative narratives. The easy headline would be: *another victim of winter.* But easy headlines do not understand rocks.
What is structural remains. Polygon's daily transactions did not go to zero. Reddit users kept minting avatars. Starbucks contracts kept running. The DeFi projects that had migrated kept operating. Functionality did not depend on the price, it depended on engineering built with seriousness.
Giants do not depend on attention. They depend on function. And function continued, silent, constant, without needing a bull market to justify its existence. Like the rock that is there when the tide rises and when the tide falls.
Ymir had fallen, and the flood had come from his blood. Bergelmir escaped and preserved the giants’ lineage. Jotunheim’s people kept that memory as they rebuilt: a people’s continuity did not require every ancestor to remain standing. It required someone to carry forward what they had received.
