The Liberation of Flow
Complete financial systems operate without a center for the first time
Midgard had learned to create. Learned to record. Learned to own. Learned to express. But there was one domain not yet completely transformed: the flow of money. For centuries, it passed through gates. Banks held it. States authorized it. Institutions decided who could access it and who could not.
Mortals began to experiment again. They did not ask permission. They did not seek approval. They simply wrote logic. Protocols like Uniswap, Compound, MakerDAO and Aave emerged, not as companies, but as autonomous structures. There, money could be lent without a bank. It could be exchanged without a broker. It could be provided as liquidity without an institution. All executed by the machine. All visible. All programmable.
In 2020, DeFi Summer accelerated on-chain lending and trading. Expansion continued in 2021, when different trackers began reporting more than one hundred billion dollars locked across DeFi protocols, depending on the networks and assets counted. That milestone does not belong to summer 2020. Thor watched a forest grow in stages, with code, governance and liquidity risks in every branch.
Errors occurred. Failures appeared. Experiments collapsed. Even so… the flow had been liberated. For the first time in human history, complete financial systems operated without a center. Without a manager. Without a gate. Without a single authority. And they worked. Not perfectly. But inevitably.
Midgard no longer depended solely on the old system. There was a new path. A parallel one. Open. Global. Unstoppable.
