The Ritual of Scarcity
New coin issuance decreases under protocol rules
The flame grew. Block after block; proof after proof. Energy transforming into permanence, but the invisible gold was not born to be abundant. Odin did not forge something that could be multiplied by human will. He forged limit. And within the very structure of the Law he inscribed a rhythm. Not visible; not announced, but inevitable.
Every 210,000 blocks, roughly four years, the subsidy of new coins per block halves. Future issuance decreases; the existing supply does not shrink. Block intervals vary: the ceremony follows chain height, not a fixed calendar date.
With each passage of time, the generosity of the network receded. Not as punishment, but as cosmic discipline. For that which is infinite loses value. That which is scarce gains permanence.
The gods did not interfere. For the Law was not created to be altered. Not even Odin could change it. Once inscribed, it remains. Each ceremony of scarcity was confirmation that the system obeyed neither men, nor empires, nor gods. It obeyed only mathematics. And mathematics does not negotiate.
As long as time exists, the rhythm will continue. And when the last fragment is emitted… the ritual will not end. It will merely change form. For absolute scarcity is the final proof of permanence.
The first four halvings occurred in November 2012, July 2016, May 2020 and April 2024: the subsidy fell from 50 to 25, 12.5, 6.25 and 3.125 BTC. Odin contemplates issuance discipline. Scarcity does not promise appreciation: Stock-to-Flow is a price hypothesis, not a mathematical law of markets.
