Canto VI: The First Test: SegWit
Magni instructs Charlie to implement SegWit on Litecoin in May 2017; Bitcoin follows suit afterward
In 2015 and 2016, an idea began to germinate in Asgard: SegWit, Segregated Witness. A technical innovation that would separate cryptographic signatures from the rest of the transaction, allowing more transactions to fit in each block: It was elegant, it was revolutionary. It was also controversial.
Bitcoin, in its pure form, feared change. Ethereum was more open to experimentation. Litecoin stood in an intermediate place; small enough to be agile, large enough to matter. And Magni saw his opportunity.
"Charlie," he whispered to his chosen mortal as he slept, "the time has come. You will not be first. You will be the tester. Implement SegWit on Litecoin first. Prove it works; prove it's safe. And when it works, the whole world will know it can trust SegWit."
Charlie woke up and understood. In May 2017, Litecoin activated SegWit. And something magical happened; nothing magical happened. The network kept working. Transactions kept being processed: No catastrophe, no chaos. Just silent success.
Litecoin activated SegWit on 10 May 2017; Bitcoin activated it on 24 August 2017, following its own debate and signaling process. In Asgard, Thor watched Magni contribute practical experience. Silver helped test a path without deciding gold’s fate alone.
You will be the tester. Implement SegWit on Litecoin first.
