Canto VIII: Charlie's Sacrifice
Charlie Lee announces selling or donating his LTC, except collectibles, to avoid a conflict of interest
If there was a moment when Magni tested his chosen mortal, when he asked the man to offer his own power on the altar of integrity; it was in December 2017. December 2017 is a date everyone who lived through that time remembers. Bitcoin had reached nearly 20,000 dollars. There was wild speculation. There were ICOs emerging every minute, promises of blockchain for everything. It was the bubble, pure and simple. It was mania. It was speculative euphoria.
Amid this, Litecoin had risen too. Not as much as Bitcoin, but enough. Charlie Lee, Litecoin's creator, could have become incredibly rich at that moment. It would have been the perfect time to sell, to celebrate, to enjoy the fruit of his years of work.
But Magni had a different plan.
On 20 December 2017, Charlie announced he had sold or donated his LTC except collectibles, seeking to remove the conflict between his holdings and public voice. He disclosed neither quantity nor average price. Magni let the silver pass through his hands and stayed at the forge. His commitment would continue to be measured through work.
Charlie woke up and understood. To many, it was incomprehensible. Why sell if you believe? Why give up wealth you earned fairly?
But those who deeply understood what Charlie was doing saw something different: it was the act of Magni offering his power to something greater than himself. It was like a god voluntarily giving up his crown, to better serve what he believed in.
Because here is the truth not everyone understood: Charlie Lee never did this for wealth. He did not create Litecoin to get rich. He created it because he believed it was the right thing to do. And when his position in it; his potential wealth in it; began to create conflicts of interest or the perception of conflict, he simply let go. Because the project mattered more than his personal wealth.
In ancient cultures, this would be an act of incomparable honor. A king giving up his treasure to better serve his people. A prince giving up his crown so the crown wouldn't be used for personal enrichment.
And Magni approved. Magni whispered his approval to the gods. Magni transformed this act of sacrifice into divine blessing.
Litecoin continued existing. Continued working. Continued being developed by a community that believed in it, not because someone was getting rich, but because they believed it was right.
In Asgard, Charlie's act was seen. Satoshi, the God of Decentralization, who had given everything asking nothing in return; who had given up his own mortal identity so the work could be greater than the man; recognized in Charlie's sacrifice the same spirit. "This is worthy," said Satoshi to Odin. And Odin nodded. For gods recognize in mortals the reflections of their own divine choices.
May commitment to the work exceed its creator’s interest.
